Power hedge trimmers are one of the most affordable garden power tools around. Corded electric models start at as little as $25. Battery-powered ones run about $50-$150.

Taller people might prefer a straight shaft string trimmer, which allows for greater reach and less strain on your back.
Look for a "split-boom" trimmer -- these are the most versatile trimmers on the market and allow you to add attachments.

Hedge Trimmers
Makita hedge trimmers are designed with rear swivel handle mechanisms for accessibility while pruning hard-to-reach areas or cutting thick growth.

Hedge trimmers make fast work of shearing plants. Hand-operated hedge trimmers are fine for small jobs, but if you maintain a large hedge you will find electric or rechargeable, battery operated models a true joy to use.

Trimmer: Sharpen very dull hedge trimmer blades by moving a file away from and diagonally across the sharp edge. Maintain the factory bevel. Then decrease the angle slightly and hone just the last 1/16 inch of the blade with a sharpening stone.

Weed Trimmers
When using a string or blade trimmer, wear long pants to protect legs from rocks or sticks and closed-toed shoes or boots to protect feet.

Hedge trimmers or shears are handy - but only if you have a hedge, or plan on growing one. Some hedge trimmers have curved blades to stop branches from sliding out when cut.

Hedge trimmers are available powered by a small petrol engine or by electricity. Most
of the modern brands are excellent value being of very light weight and in the case of
electrical models having built in safety cut-out facilities.

String trimmer -- A must-have for a polished, clean-looking yard.
Blower -- Blowers make quick work of clearing leaves, grass and debris on lawns, driveways and decks.

With hand trimmers, you can be more comfortable that you will not slice into the wood too much, but electric and gas powered trimmers it's easy to accidentally take too much off.

Ajuga, Arabis, Aurinia, Dianthus, Iberis, Lamium, Lamiastrum, Phlox subulata, Pulmonaria, and Saponaria ocymoides all bloom in spring.

Do not use line trimmers to cut grass against the bark of trees. This will damage the bark, often severely enough to kill the tree. Instead, establish a grass-free, mulched area around the tree so that close trimming is not necessary.

Brushcutters and trimmers, used on a slight angle are excellent for cutting grass around large garden beds or paths, but care needs to be taken not to cut the plants. Some models have an adjustable handle length and different blade attachments.

If you use a string trimmer, be aware that it may actually sling pieces of grass from the lawn into nearby beds. "Even the smallest piece of Bermuda grass can root very quickly and in no time take over the entire bed," says James.

The old hedge manual hedge trimmers; although this is labour intensive, many professionals still like to use manual pruners. Manual hedge trimmers tend to take a small amount of trimming each time.

Hand shears are fine for short runs, but if it's a long hedge, invest in an electric, battery or petrol-powered hedge trimmer. It will make light work of the job and won't leave you with tired arms.

Trimmer. A trimmer, similar to an edger, can be used to clean up the places your lawn mower missed. Trimmers are useful for cutting through patches of weeds or tall grasses. They tend to run on gasoline or electricity and cut rapidly.

Wood chip mulches insulate soil from temperature fluctuations, protect trees from string trimmers and mowers and reduce problems of weeds in shrub beds.

The work surface on the dry side must at least be large enough to hold the enlarger and a paper trimmer. The area of the wet side's work surface is dependent upon the largest size of enlargement you plan to make. Why?

Another option is to use a lawn trimmer to shred leaves in a garbage can. Several different models of shredders and chippers are available for sale or rental to use in shredding woody materials and leaves.

Trimming around fences isn't difficult, but it does take a lot of time, and it eats up the line of your trimmer. An easy solution is to simply kill the grass for about three inches out from the base of the fence.

You can mow cover crops with a lawn mower or a weed trimmer, depending on how tall the plants are. Wait a day or two until the leaves and stems dry down, and then dig them in.

8.Do not run into plants with lawn mowers or string trimmers because this may leave large cuts at the base of the plants and cause infection which could eventually lead to the death of the plant.

Plan to maintain the boundary between lawn and flowerbed by edging with a flat spade, half-moon edger, or weed-trimmer.

If weeds grow taller than the grass, cut the entire area (no lower than 4 inches) with a string trimmer. You may need to do this once a month during the first year.

Summer is winding down and soon it will be time to drain the gas from the lawn mower and safely store the string trimmer. You may feel like summer yard work is done for another year. But don't turn your back on your lawn just yet.

If you place the head directly against the edge, an edger or weed-trimmer may damage it. Install the sprinkler heads where they are even with the level of the soil, not to the level of the turf or higher.

Sources of stress include mechanical damage to roots caused by construction, line trimmer damage, heavily compacted soils, drought, foliar fungal disease and general plant neglect.

The first cut on grass where naturalised bulbs have been grown should be high and the height reduced gradually as the season progresses. As the grass is likely to be long, a nylon line trimmer may work more efficiently than a mower for the first cut.
