Trowels resemble shovels, except this tool is a hand-held version. Trowels come in plastic or metal models and work well in tight spaces when creating container gardens.

A trowel. The trowel is essentially a tiny shovel. In a perfect world, we wouldn't need this tool because we'd all be gardening in fluffy, rich soil.

Hand Trowel -- an excellent tool for gardening in containers and small spaces; mixing potting media; planting seedlings; and digging out weeds. Most have a wooden handle and broad or narrow blades.

A hand trowel is ideal for digging small holes. It is used for planting seeds, flowers, vegetables and other small plants. I use this more often than any of my garden tools.

Use a trowel to remove sand and graded base from the planting pocket and replace it with soil. Plant a clump-forming aromatic herb, such as thyme (image 2). Water well.

Clean and disinfect trowels, rakes, hoes and sprinklers before packing them. Mix one part household bleach to three parts water, then leave these tools to soak in the solution for one hour. Rinse and dry them thoroughly before packing.

Hand-pulling and digging individual weeds with a trowel is fine for small gardens and raised beds, but for most gardens you will want a more substantial tool.

We all need a variety of garden tools to achieve our gardening tasks, whether it be a simple trowel or a more complex tiller. Finding the right tool for the job and looking after it correctly is something all successful gardeners take pride in.
