I am a big fan of the compost tumbler for a few reasons. All of the compost tumbler type composters will speed your detritus-to-humus process, usually cutting the time in half (or more!).
Compost tumblers and mixers are designed to produce finished compost quickly and with minimum effort.
Compost tumblers do a good job of producing compost in a short amount of time, but they can be impractical if you're faced with a mountain of leaves every fall.

A compost tumbler and wood chipper/shredder are useful in a larger garden. A compost tumbler is a nice tool if you make your own compost. Turning the compost becomes less of a workout with the turn of a handle.
'Window Box Roma' tomato, for instance, stays a size that's manageable for pots, and 'Tumbler' tomato vines spill nicely out of hanging baskets. Beans, peas, and even squash can be grown up trellises set into a larger container.
Some bins can be turned; these "tumblers" are designed to make turning the compost easier; some work well and others don't. Be sure the composter you choose is convenient to load and unload and extremely easy to turn because wet compost is heavy.
A barrel or tumbler-type bin can hold more material and can compost faster (as quickly as three weeks) due to more aeration.
