Few other plants are loved as much as roses. There is no other flower that possesses such variety of flower colour and shape, with many having the addition of beautiful fragrance and prolonged display of their blooms.

Vegetative Propagation: Making new plants asexually, usually by taking cuttings or layering, etc.

UNDERPLANTING - Growing short plants such as a ground cover under taller plants. Under taller trees, some shrubs would be used as an underplanting.
UNDERSTORY - The smaller trees that grow below the major forest.

UNDER GLASS: A term in older books referring to "growing under glass", basically growing in a greenhouse.

Try underplanting with spring-flowering bulbs. Plant bulbs in containers at regular depth (3x size of the bulb), but space them closer together than you would in the open ground.

Even the "Big Three" groundcovers—pachysandra, periwinkle, and ivy—can be attractive when lavishly embroidered with an underplanting of bulbs such as daffodils, snowflakes, wood hyacinths, or colchicums.

Overgrown floaters must be thinned out so that the ambient light reaches the underplantings. Water evaporates quickly indoors, making it necessary to top off with additional water occasionally. A regular regimen of fertilizing is crucial for success.

An underplanting of evergreen or semi-evergreen plants like barrenwort(Epimedium species), bigroot geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum), or Bergenia-all of which color bronze to red in winter-complement the scale and shades of the witchhazels.

Group and rock plantings can be taken a step further by adding small underplantings of alpine plants and tiny shrubs. Rocks can be embedded into the soil and small streams suggested by the use of white sand.

Oddly enough, 'Silver King' artemisia makes a superb underplanting with Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) or the lower growing shrubby autumn elaeagnus (E. Umbellata).

Dress up your olive tree by placing it in a terracotta pot and underplanting it with variegated ivy. It should be kept sheltered from cold winter winds, but makes a great alternative to the traditional Christmas tree.

To create a picturesque fall display, you can repeat the brilliant hues of these trees with underplantings of shrubs featuring foliage that also changes color with the season.

Their well-behaved roots make them suitable for including in flower beds or underplanting with bulbs, ground-covers, or shallow-rooted annuals.

Its star-shaped pink, purple or white flowers grace any summer garden. Try using this sedum as an underplanting for fall crocus. While S. spurium spreads rapidly, it is not quite as invasive as S. Acre.
