My brother and I went to a family reunion yesterday. I have never been and he has only been to one. We didn't know a soul, but I loved it. As we have gotten older, we have become more interested in our roots.
The bulge where the parts join, called the graft union, gets planted just at or below ground level, depending on your climate. Where winter temperatures drop to -10° F or colder, plant the graft union 4 to 6 inches deep.
Some climber roses have frozen below the graft union. In this case, you may need to replace the plant. Examine the color of the canes to determine the damage. Frozen tissue is dark brown beneath the bark when you scrape with your fingernail.
For grafted trees grown on standard rootstocks, position the tree so that the graft union, the point at which the scion and the rootstock were joined together, is 1 to 2 inches below the surface of the ground.
When buying a tree look for the graft union, making sure that it is clean and that no shoots appear below the union. The main branch above the union should be straight and sturdy with a good, well developed system of shoots.
When grafting it is important to get the cambium layers of both the rootstock and the scion variety as close together as possible so that when the cells start dividing the union heals quickly.
After 12 to 14 days, healing and union should have occurred, so remove the tape. The easiest removal is to simply make a vertical cut through it on the backside of the stock away from the bud, then slip it off.

When removing an entire cane, make the cut as flush as you can to the bud union. If you leave a stub, it can die back into the bud union allowing entry for disease and pests.
You may need to use a tree saw to get the final flush cut.
