Variegated corn (Zea mays var. japonica) is a real show- stopper, with purple tassels and green leaves that are prominently striped with white and pink.

The variegated, strap-shaped leaves which grow in a cluster send out pale, yellow, wiry stalks which can get over two feet long. Initially, the cascading stalks bear small white flowers which later form little plantlets referred to as spiders.

The variegated hebe in the center is actually a shrub. If you live in USDA zone 9 or warmer, it'll be hardy. Small shrubs like this are a way to get double duty from container plants. Buy them small and use them for a couple of years in containers.

'Aurea' ('Variegated') has yellow variegation on new spring growth, which fades when plants flower. After flowering, cut plants back to encourage new variegated shoots.

Sometimes variegated Cannas such as "Bengal Tiger" will start to loose their gold stripes and revert back to plain green leaves.

Rosemary planted a variegated Pittosporum to create a screen, which should grow at least another 2 metres. There is also a Photinia, which will eventually double in height. Rosemary is going to have a magnificent screen.

mosaic virus A serious disease that produces a distinctive, rather attractive, variegated pattern on the leaves and hard dark green misshapen fruits with bright yellow blotches. It is spread by touch, and by aphids.

Variegated Vinca - V. minor 'Sterling Silver' - If you want a groundcover that is fast spreading and downright invasive, this is the groundcover for you. It also is a fun addition to window boxes. However, plant with caution.

This is one of the prettiest euphorbias ever. Hardy to Zone 4, its green and cream foliage is flushed with pink early in the season.

There are also variegated varieties which can brighten up shady spots. Colors which are opposite on the color wheel will work well together, such as yellow and purple.

To complement the yellow-brick house, they introduced golden Italian cypress and repeated the color in scented, variegated daphne (Casey's choice), yellow acanthus and strap-leafed 'Golden Sword' yucca.

For something brighter, try a variegated euonymus such as Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ‘n' Gold' or the winter-flowering heather, Erica carnea, and its many varieties. Unlike most heathers, Erica carnea tolerates alkaline soil.

These low-growing leafy plants come in several shades and some are variegated. Sizes range from 10 inches to up to three feet tall, depending on the cultivar. Hostas grow in mounds and sprout spikes of fragrant flowers in lavender and white.
