Variegation - The presence of another color other than the main color on the leaf, stem, or petal of a plant. For example, green with white stripes on leaves, or green leaves with white edging on ivy.

Variegation patterns in Chinese evergreens are called 'figurative patterning' and are similar to the markings on a Holstein cow, which are also under genetic control.
Definitions ...

Loss of variegation can mean the plant needs a bit more light.
Suddenly paler looking leaves mean the plant is getting too much sun.
NOTE: All parts of the pothos plant are poisonous if ingested.

The striking variegation of the evergreen giant reed makes it a popular choice, although it is less vigorous and less hardy than the green form.

Interesting yellow or white variegation on a green, heart shaped leaf on a trailing clumping vine. This is a low light specialist and the toughest one I know; if you kill this one you're not trying! Water it once a month and give it some room.

A beautiful specimen with two-toned leaves and a faint gray-green variegation, 'Woodcote Farm' sage is welcome in the many-shades-of-green herb garden.

Snake plants thrive in full sun; they will tolerate low light but color variegations will not be as pronounced. Snake plants are able to tolerate periods of drought but will not tolerate wet conditions since root rot may occur.

This species is native to Japan and has long been grown for its interesting variegation patterns in the foliage and showy autumn blooms.

Many think that the best way to buy a coleus is full grown, when the characteristic colors and variegations are established.

Variegation (color) in the leaves is often lost in low light. A plant in low light needs less water and fertilizer than the same plant in better light. Place a low-light plant within 2-3 ft. of a window with a northern exposure, 3-5 ft.

Cornus kousa `Limon Ripple'--New kousa dogwood has distinctive foliage that maintains its variegation throughout the summer. Each leaf is unique with a green central area surrounded by a wide band of chartreuse yellow on the edges.

Prefers bright indirect light, but variegation is more intense if the plant receives 2-3 hours of sun. Needs higher humidity. Allow soil to dry before watering. Good climber or hanging plant. Propagation is by softwood cuttings

The golds and yellows and ones with pale variegations are particularly susceptible to sunburn. They are renowned for their ability to thrive in very damp conditions, but we also use them extensively in very dry shade.

Leaves come in colors from bright green to gold and even blue tones; variegation can result in an edging or center of white, cream or gold; or splashes of color. Leaf texture varies and can be smooth, veined, or even puckered.

The ‘Marble Queen' variety has smooth leaves with white variegation, and the ‘Golden Pothos' has golden, yellow-green variegation. The waxy, smooth leaves retain moisture well, making it tolerant to adverse conditions.

Ginger mint has yellow variegations in the leaves which I think should be larger than pennyroyal leaves.Ginger mint does also have quite a distinct ginger smell.

'Aurea' ('Variegated') has yellow variegation on new spring growth, which fades when plants flower. After flowering, cut plants back to encourage new variegated shoots.

The lacy variegation and toothed edge on these leathery evergreen leaves are beautiful even when it's not in bloom. Creamy green flowers are sure to be some of the earliest to bloom and make fine cut flowers as well.

albolineata has a broad creamy white band down the centre of its frond giving this fern a very decorative variegation. The Central American Lace Fern Cheilanthes myriophylla has very delicate, textured foliage.

REVERT - Sometimes a particular cultivar might change back to one of its original species. I.e. Variegation going to solid green, some doubles going to single.

family, society garlic flowers may be lavender, variegated or pink in color. Larger society garlic flowers grow on the cultivars ''Silver Lace' and 'Variegata', with cream-colored stripes. The ‘Tricolor' variety has pink and white variegation.

The fuzzy, silvery foliage can grow long enough to trail and will readily weave itself throughout surrounding plants. Along with silvery-gray colors, other varieties produce shades of greens and variegations.

For a stunning effect plant 'David' with Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' or Miscanthus sinensis 'Cabaret' to provide a color echo of the variegation of the grass foliage with the white flowers of 'David'.
