VEGETATION - An all encompassing word for the plants of an area or territory.

Variety names including 'Rose Pink', 'White', and 'Lavender Lady' describe the varied Rower colors. Dramatic 'Bicolor Rose' adds another dimension with its soft lilac-rose flowers accented by white centers.

Variety names are subspecies of a given plant. The terms subspecies and variety are often used interchangeably. A variety is a plant that is slightly different from the species in some minor but noticeable way and may some day become a species.

If you find plants in bud, look at the variety name. Variety names are usually, but not always, a good indication of the plant's bloom color. 'Jaio Scarlet Eye' (from Dai-Ichi Seed) is rose-scarlet with a small white eye.

My wife also loves cabbage, and I grow a variety named 'Fast Ball' that is quick and small enough (one meal's worth) to actually fit in the fridge. My oldest son adores brussels sprouts so we always put in a few plants.

The Latin variety name acephala translates as "headless," because these plants have loose terminal clusters of foliage, not the compressed head of leaves of red cabbage, for example.

I recently discovered a variety named Aquilegia 'Pom Poms', these have blooms like those on my Pink Bonnets variety except they are very double. The extra full blooms take their elegance to an entirely different level.

The pictures are luscious and most are labeled with specific variety names. However, these are not just coffee table books. They contain easy to understand information on growing hydrangeas.

3. Label your container with the variety name and set it somwhere warm but out of direct sun. You can prop the lid on but don't seal it shut. Remember you're fermenting here so this is going to stink. Find an out-of-the-way spot if you can.

The capital letters after a variety name (`Cavalier' VFNTA, for example) indicate its disease resistance (see "Breaking the Tomato Code").

Cover seeds with a layer of vermiculite and label with variety name and date of sowing.

To identify a specific cultivar, its variety name appears in single quotes after the scientific name, such as 'Golden Boy'.

There are also a lot of interesting shrubs and herbaceous plants, including a wonderful collection of Hellebores, in particular one variety named after Otto Helleborus 'Otto's Plum'.

The use of hybrid bluegrass varieties (Kentucky x Texas) in full sun areas can be desirable for their heat tolerance, deep rooting and potential to require less irrigation. Hybrid variety names include 'Reveille', 'Thermal Blue', 'Dura Blue', ...

VARIETY -- One of possibly many closely-related plant species. The variety name is usually in Latin.

Sets are not usually sold by variety name, but as "fresh onions"or "transplants." Onions grown from sets will produce seed heads. Pluck them off to push growth into bulbs, not seed. They are not generally suitable for storage onions.

I tried some peppers like this one time and if I remember correctly the pepper itself was red but the plant and everything was a dark purple. I really want to plant some but don't have a clue what the variety name is.

Resistance to these diseases is designated by a V or F after the variety name. If tomatoes in your region suffer from root-knot nematode (N), Tobacco Mosaic virus (T) or Alternaria (A), look for resistance to these diseases as well.
