The black widow spider can be recognized by the red hourglass marking on its ventral side of the abdomen. The black widow spider is about 1 to 1.5 inches in size and is a shiny, lustrous black color except for the red colored hourglass marking.

with delicate, almost veinless wings, a light reddish-brown body (about 1 mm long), and two caudal filaments as long as or longer than the body (not shown in fig. 2). It is peculiar in having three pairs of eyes (dorsal, lateral, and ventral).
