The Verticillium fungus persists in soil and infects a number of different trees through the roots including catalpa, ash, maple, redbud and sumac.

The thread leaf Coreopsis verticillata are increasingly popular. The feathery texture of the leaves and the profusion of bloom are certainly worthy features.

Verticillium wilt
Symptom: Lower leaves begin to wilt; foliage appears mottled, the leaf areas between veins turning yellow, then brown.

VERTICILLIUM - A fungus disease that will cause wilting and death. This is the "V" in "V,F,N".
VFN - Indicate whether or not a plant is resistant to verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, or certain nematodes. Many times all three.

Verticillate Arranged in whorls or arranged in a radiating patterns.
Vesicle A small bladdery sac or cavity filled with air or fluid.
Vestige The remains of an exhausted or dead plant structure.

Verticillium wilt appears first on lower leaves, which turn yellow and wilt.

F = fusarium wilt (a second F indicates resistance to more than one race of fusarium)

Coreopsis verticillata, also called moonbeam, threadleaf, and tickseed, is an airy perennial plant with slender foliage that produces gorgeous yellow flowers during its blooming season. It gets its common names directly from its appearance.

Coreopsis verticillata is an old friend that I've grown in a wide range of garden soils and that simply keeps on growing once established.

Fusarium and Verticillium are soil-borne fungi that cause vascular wilt diseases in tomatoes. They grow in the water-conducting tissues of the plant. A close look will reveal brown discoloration in the tomato's stem.

Thread-leaved coreopsis (coreopsis verticillata) grows 1 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. This perennial flower produces 1 to 2 inch starry flowers in a butter yellow to golden yellow shade.

One of the problems that you can encounter with heirlooms is their lack of resistance to soil borne disease such as Fusarium wilt, Verticilium wilt.

Pests & Diseases: They are fairly troublefree but they can be attacked by aphids, gall mites, red spider mite. They can also suffer from coral spot, honey fungus, tar spot and verticillium wilt.
