Verticillium Wilt of Catalpa and Other Trees
A rapid wilting of catalpa trees is presumably the result of a disease called Verticillium wilt. This can be confirmed by culturing.

 


Verticillium Wilt This name can be misleading, as sometimes the leaves will turn yellow, dry up and never appear to wilt. Verticillium wilt is caused by a soil-borne fungus and it can affect many different vegetables.

Symptom: Lower leaves begin to wilt; foliage appears mottled, the leaf areas between veins turning yellow, then brown.

Verticillium wilt appears first on lower leaves, which turn yellow and wilt.

Due to Verticillium wilt we recommend not planting where potatoes have been grown the previous year. Some gardeners prefer to wait at least 3 years before placing strawberry plants in these areas.

Trunk canker causes branches to die, and verticillium wilt, a soil-borne fungal disease, also causes parts of redbud trees to wilt and die. Ultimately, most elderly redbuds succumb to heart-wood rot, dying from the inside out.

Rust, verticillium wilt, and powdery mildew can also affect sunflower plants on occasion. However, the most common threat to these plants is Sclerotinia stem rot, also known as white mold.

Pests & Diseases: They are fairly troublefree but they can be attacked by aphids, gall mites, red spider mite. They can also suffer from coral spot, honey fungus, tar spot and verticillium wilt.

Also, be sure to locate your strawberry bed away from any spot where you have grown peppers, tomatoes, eggplant or potatoes. These plants can harbor verticillium wilt, which is devastating to strawberries.

Any contact with the tree roots can cause the entire plant to wilt; symptoms which can also be mistaken for verticillium wilt. Leaves and nuts also contain juglone and should be avoided in the garden or a composter.

Strawberries are subject to fruit rot (botrytis), root rot (red stele), and fungus (verticillium wilt). Consult your nurseryman about which varieties may not be appropriate for your area.
