Phytophthora Dieback, Phytophthora cactorum: The oomycete, or water mold, Phytophthora causes one of the most common disease problems in the landscape for rhododendrons and azaleas.

 


Disease Cycle: The pathogen belongs to a group of fungi known as water molds that require high levels of moisture and cool temperatures for growth and reproduction.

Damping-off-A complex of water molds (fungi) that attacks seedlings, causing them to wilt and die. These fungal pathogens-Phytophthora, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia-thrive in wet, humid conditions and are the causal agents.

When oxygen is scarce, certain root-rotting fungi such as the aptly named water molds, Pythium and Phytophthora, flourish. And roots stressed by oxygen deprivation are more susceptible to infection by these pathogens.
