Water table

The water table - the point in the soil at which water drains away
Shady or north facing corners often have damp soil
Much of the rainfall tends to come from the south west. Easterly aspects, protected by the house, tend to be dry.

Drought conditions and low water tables highlight the importance of providing clean water for pollinators. But butterflies steer away from bird baths because they like very shallow water.

The problem with water soluble nitrogen is that it's water soluble; sure, it makes it real easy to put on, but the next rain washes whatever didn't make it into a plant right out of the root zone and into the water table.

This situation occurs where the water table is near the soil surface. As water evaporates from the surface, capillary action brings mineral-laden ground water up to replace it.

Places with seep springs, a high water table or a low spot with poor drainage can be made attractive with a wide variety of plants adapted to these conditions.

If you plant them in a place near a pond, or where they have access to a water table, they will do just fine on their own. If this is not the case, make sure they do not dry out.

You can also buy organic lawn care repellants that drive away pesky critters without pumping toxins into the air and water table.

A centrifugal pump can be used above a shallow water table. Sinking a 1.5m diameter concrete well liner enables you to get the pump close to the water source.

If you buy bareroot plants by mail, you will need to plant them in early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked, while the plants are still dormant and the water table is high.

Drawdowns-The lowering of the water table, or level of groundwater. Drawdowns are evidence of decreasing amounts of available water.

Wet ground and saturated soils can be caused by compaction or problematic grading. It may be an unusually high water table that sits just below the surface. Sites with seasonal summer flooding render soils inhospitable to actively growing plants.

Historically, injury has been most common in locations where local water tables are high, supplying subsurface moisture critical to their survival.

Although wild blueberry plants are often found in bogs, their shallow root systems actually penetrate only the aerated mounds of soil above the water table. Ideal blueberry soils are well-drained and constantly moist, but not waterlogged.

If you want to plant a magnolia near water, make sure the plant has 40 - 50 centimetres of well prepared and aerated soil above the water table to get itself established in.

Wet feet-A condition where plants are exposed to excess soil moisture caused by flooding, a high water table, or compacted soil.

Water heavily to settle the plants in. Rather than just watering a little bit every day, it’s actually better to water a lot once a week and then stop, as the roots will find the water table.'
Tips from the top ...

A rain garden mimics the natural hydrological cycle in which rainwater is used and cleansed of pollutants by plants, and is then naturally filtered as it percolates into the ground to replenish the water table.

process, they are easy to apply and give a carefully controlled mixture of the 3 main nutrients required by plants. Over use of artificial fertilizers can create an imbalance in the environment and excess nutrients can leech into the water table or ...
