weatheringWeathering is the process which changes a material in time. Or, in architecture, the slope on a buttress to shed rainwater. wildernessA Wilderness is a wood, kept for pleasure, with walks.

Weathering is first manifested by a change in the color of the wood. The color of most preservative-treated lumber is either light green (from copper and chromium salts in the preservative) or brown (from added dye).

As Richard Doyle, soil scientist, points out, 'The soils that have formed very recently are often formed from materials that have gone through a number of weathering cycles so they are often impoverished in their nutrient status.' ...

Clay minerals are typically formed over long periods of time by the gradual chemical weathering of rocks (usually silicate-bearing) by low concentrations of carbonic acid and other diluted solvents.

Soils are formed from above (decaying organic matter) and from below (weathering bedrock). These two directions of creation create layers in the soil, known as soil horizons.

For window boxes constructed from wood or other materials susceptible to weathering and decay, a liner helps them to last longer.

The soil layer below the effect of weathering, made up of undifferentiated and unconsolidated parent materials, located immediately below the c horizon. See also: A horizon, B horizon.

Many soils get their character from the parent rock that was their main source. The weathering of rock involves not just breaking down the bedrock into smaller and smaller fragments, but chemical changes that occur in some of the minerals of the rock.

This abnormal growth, or "gall", appears cone-like and is a light brown color after weathering. Galls are found in greatest number on the north and east sides of the tree.

Hardy bulbs capable of weathering the cold-winter climates are found in their native mountains of China, Japan, Russia and Turkey. Tender bulbs hail from central Asia, South Africa, Mediterranean climates such as Northern Africa and southern Europe.

It always looks so soft and so much like a natural weathering process that I prefer it to any solid color process. And the pale bluish-green color reflects the light so it's safe to sit down with bare legs even on hot days.

Big in all dimensions, this showy 30-inch plant is covered all summer with 4- to 5-inch dahlia-like vivid orange-red flowers. After weathering the blistering 1983 summer at Flower and Garden's Demonstrations, it continued to look good in September.

Most craft stores carry products you paint on to create this effect instantly. If you prefer the original color of the copper, coat it with a water-based polyurethane to protect it from weathering in the elements.
