Wet soil
Wet soils, usually heavy or peaty in nature, hold water well and dry out slowly, and are suitable for many marginal or moisture-loving species, and also some aquatics, but need improved drainage for other species to survive healthily.

Whether you are simply making minor contour changes in your wet site, such as making a path, or taking on a larger project, such as constructing raised beds, it's important to work when the soil is relatively dry.

Wet soil can mean the death of many landscape plants — due not only to excess water but also to lack of oxygen. Plants that can't tolerate such conditions usually die of suffocation.

Wet soil is the main reason for failure, so good drainage is essential.

Naturally wet soil is often high in organic matter and very fertile. A low spot in your yard may be wet because a clay hardpan is keeping moisture from draining away.

Driving on a wet soil is much more likely to cause ruts. When the soil is wet, the sand, silt and clay particles are lubricated. Wet soil compacts easily. The soil particles can slide together and fill pore spaces when pressure is applied.

Rye ought never to be sown upon wet soils, nor even upon sandy soils where the subsoil is of a retentive nature.

It will tolerate occasional wet soil. Hibiscus moscheutos can grow in full sun to part shade but blooms better in full sun. Fertilize in spring with a 10-10-10 . Mulch the plant during the dry summer to maintain even moisture.

Few bulbous plants can tolerate continuously wet soil as it will cause them to rot, so garden beds need to be well-drained. In heavy clay soil, raise the bed. In pots, use a good quality, free-draining potting mix. Mulching is also important.

Make sure the seed is fungicide treated if you plant the corn in cool wet soil, since these conditions favor the growth of fungi which can rapidly rot the seed.

The tree is not hardy against cold weather or wet soils but is good in partial shade, against pruning and in coastal (salty air) conditions. It should be planted in early spring in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade.

On heavy or wet soil, first remove the topsoil, fork over subsoil and cover with a layer of broken bricks or other hardcore. On lighter, well-drained soil, place a layer of rubble at ground level.

Very few herbs grow well in wet soil. A good way to ensure proper drainage is to make sure that there is a 3-inch layer of crushed stone under your beds down to about twelve to fifteen inches.

Because of their porosity, unglazed terra-cotta and wood pots are especially susceptible to water damage from wet soil and evaporation through the container.

Nutrient deficiencies, nutrient excesses, soil compaction, acidic soils, excessive shade, wet soils and many other problems can be detected by what plants are successful in infiltrating a lawn.

If there is some concern about bad drainage, plant your magnolia in a slightly raised bed so it does not sit in a pool of wet soil.

Select a site with light to full shade and moist, humus-rich soil. Astilbes may tolerate full sun as long as soil remains consistently moist.

Most vegetable plants perform poorly in heavy, wet soil. This type of soil will usually dry out a bit as the season progresses, so don't cover it up with a thick, moisture-retentive mulch.

To determine which category your soil falls into, take a handful of wet soil and squeeze it in the palm of your hand. If the soil forms a tight ball it has too much clay. Water has difficulty permeating clay soil and will sit on top for long periods.

You do not want your potatoes sitting in wet soils, it increases the likelyhood of fungal attack, and the Potatoes will rot. Form up your rows into mounds of around 15cm high.
