Whiteflies
Adults are small and yellowish with dull white wings. Immature whiteflies are oval, flattened, and yellowish scale-like insects. Heavily infested plants send up a cloud of adults when disturbed. Do not purchase infested plants.

Whiteflies are small flies, approximately 1/8 of an inch long. They are completely white and can be seen flying off your plants, when you shake them. These insects pierce the outer layer of your plants and extract the liquids contained inside.

What are Whiteflies?
Despite their name, whiteflies are not true flies. They tiny, soft bodied fly-like insects in the same insect Order (Homoptera) as aphids, leafhoppers, mealybugs and scale insects.
Sweet potato whiteflies live and feed on the undersides of leaves, sucking out plant juices. Oftentimes, the presence of these pests results in the growth of black sooty mold. In addition, you may see leaf yellowing and shredding.
Green lacewings larvae (Aphid Lions) will eat spider mites, thrips, leafhoppers, whiteflies and caterpillar eggs.
This insect is normally purchased in the egg stage, and allowed to hatch out in the proximity of an insect problem.
Whiteflies and aphids may present a problem on indoor tomato and pepper plants. Keep a close watch for these pests so that they do not get a good start in your planting.

Parasitic wasps are also beneficial and include braconid wasps which attack aphids, caterpillars and the larvae of many beetles. Ichneumonid wasps can help to control whiteflies, aphids and some caterpillars.
