For any window box to be a success it must have a minimum depth of 15cm (6in),
preferably more so that root systems can develop properly. Drainage is vital, and
must preferably be provided by holes in the base.

Window boxes: These are simply rectangular boxes. Traditionally these were hung outside windows. Now they can be found hanging on fences, on deck rails and along the perimeter of patios. Window boxes can be made of wood, plastic or wire.

Climbing annuals are another good choice, especially for cottage garden settings and containers (window boxes, hanging baskets, etc.).

They can be started in a window box or small flats and then transplanted into small pots, paper cups with adequate drainage holes, or other containers once seedlings have become sturdy enough.

Plant them in window boxes or standard containers in combination with other annuals, such as geraniums, zinnias (Z. angustifolia in particular), lobelia, fan flower (Scaevola), and dusty miller.

First, measure the five pieces of the window box on a section of cedar board.

Pansy, a member of the violet family, is a cool-season crop that may be grown in borders, edging and window boxes. It can even be used for cut flowers. Pansies are considered a perennial plant, which means they live longer than one growing season.

Grow them as wildflowers or in containers or window boxes. Statice has airy sprays in strong yellow, rose, lavender, blue and white make an interesting garden accent. It grows from 12 to 24 inches.

Annual vines are easy to grow in flower beds, hanging baskets, window boxes or trellised planters. They transform unattractive areas, and provide a quick and inexpensive solution to many landscape problems.

Root cuttings in a window box or some other suitable container, preferably covered with plastic to maintain high humidity. About 5 inches of clean, coarse sand is a good rooting medium.

For the cook who doesn't have a garden, herbs can be successfully grown in window boxes, troughs, shallow tubs, hanging baskets, bowls or pots.

Also, consider the container's weight, especially if it will be a hanging window box or basket. Is it too heavy for a balcony? Will you be able to move it? If a container is in a windy location, low and heavy pots and planters work well.

Consider adding window boxes or planters, mend the gate, paint the front door and window frames, remove any rubbish that may have blown in from the street, and if there is a front lawn, make sure it is mown.

You can grow herbs and even a handful of veggies in window boxes. This one contains oregano along with geranium, blue ginger, Peperomia, and a pretty begonia.

Try them in containers or window boxes. Statice has airy sprays in strong yellow, orange, apricot, peach, rose, lavender, blue and white make an interesting garden accent. It grows from 12 to 24 inches.

For city dwellers the "green" link might even be some houseplants and window boxes or even a roof top garden.

The dwarf to medium sized basils; such as Little-leaf bush or Spicy globe are ideal for small pots and window boxes. Don't forget Dark Opal Basil which not only stands up as a culinary herb but also works well as a decorative accent plant.

Split rail fences, arbors, seating, structures and enhancements don't have to be dull brown or black. Painted pots and boldly colored window boxes can complement or contrast with plantings.

You can use any variety of items for containers, depending upon how functional they are and how attractive you want them to be. Window boxes, hanging planters, and decorative pots make aesthetically pleasing planters.

This is an often-evergreen, drought tolerant herb available in groundcover forms, meaning it's a great bet for cascading over walls and using in window boxes or other containers.
