Wood garden boxes serve as the base for a container garden. For this reason, purchase treated lumber if you plan to construct a wood garden box. If you purchase a wood garden box, make sure it is made of materials that will last for a long time.

Wood chips make an ideal mulch for use in planting beds, around trees, and in decorative gardens. They also aid in maintaining adequate soil moisture and preventing weed infiltration.

Wood ashes are alkaline in reaction and contain salts high in potassium. In eastern acid soils lacking potassium or "potash," disposing of wood ashes in the garden is an excellent fertilization practice.

The disease develops very quickly and there is no control. Prevent further disease by removing the diseased tree. If able to do so, burn the wood to reduce the chance of disease spread to nearby trees.

Wood is considered the beginning of new life. Just as spring brings new plants and new life, wood is the originator of the five elemental cycle. A shrub or bushy plant emits and retains "Ch'i".

Wood ashes contain a large amount of carbonate of potassa, with also the sulphate and silicate of that alkali. Peat ashes vary in different regions, but always are found useful as manure.

Wood - this is the most common material used for pergolas. The most popular type used in the UK is softwood that has been pressure treated with a suitable preservative. Hardwood has natural durability and doesn't require pressure treatment.

Wood handles need a little special care. Once a year, lightly sand the entire handle with fine sandpaper. Next, apply some boiled linseed oil to a rag and rub it into the handle. The oil will help to seal the wood and keep it free of splinters.

Wood from cherry trees is hard. It makes excellent lumber for furniture. It also is good as wood for your fireplace.

The wood is sometimes used for furniture, in tokonoma pillars, and as a material for sculptors. The tanin-loaded bark is often used for tanning leather and as a dye.

Some wood mulches are good, some not so, and some have little use as mulch. The worst offender of the bunch is one I see used all the time and I suspect is even more prevalent than I know; trail chips.

If you are building a planter using wood, use rot resistant wood such as redwood or cedar, and coat the inside with waterproof paint.
The growing medium
The choice of growing medium is extremely important.

The most commonly used forms of humus are: peat moss, shaved tree bark, manure, sawdust, leaf mold, wood shavings, and sawdust. Just remember that humus from wood tends to be low in nitrogen so make sure to add any additional nitrogen accordingly.

Generally, softer wood roots more readily than harder wood, though the softer the wood, the more likely it is that problems will occur with fungus diseases. Cuttings are taken in the morning when full of moisture.

Although the number of wood-boring beetles attacking fruit trees is relatively small and their infestations sporadic, four species found in New York are capable of seriously damaging or killing trees when they do occur.

I pruned the leaf canopy of the trees so that some light would come through, taking out the dead wood and broken branches. I applied several layers of compost, but was careful not to make it so deep that the trees' roots would be smothered.

These situations call for a few well-placed paving stones, a wood-chip path or some shade-tolerant ground cover.

You can mix in topsoil, wood ash and lime. Lime creates a nonacid compost. If your plants need acidity, leave out the lime. Water the pile throughout the two week process if needed to keep it moist, not soggy.

Frost cracks are splits in bark and wood of a tree that result from rapid drops in temperature. They may be associated with internal defects resulting from previous injury to the trunk years prior to splitting.

There are some variables to consider; WHAT plant are you trying to propagate, and are you trying to propagate this with soft wood, semi-hardwood or hardwood cuttings?

This is a thin layer of cells between the bark and the wood of plant stems which divide to increase the strength and thickness of the stems.
