You can put some wood chips in an existing compost pile, but do so sparingly. Ideally, it should make up no more than a quarter of the pile.

Wood chips. This material contains bark and wood pieces of various sizes. It makes attractive mulch and provides good weed control. Small wood chips decompose very rapidly using nitrogen from the soil, which needs to be replaced with a fertilizer.

Wood - this is the most common material used for pergolas. The most popular type used in the UK is softwood that has been pressure treated with a suitable preservative. Hardwood has natural durability and doesn't require pressure treatment.

Wood Heat. Whether you burn logs for pleasure or survival, don't just toss those ashes away. Wood ash is a good source of potassium, and also contains a small amount of phosphorous.

Wood Hyacinth. This bulb plant grows in vaselike clusters of narrow, glossy leaves. The bell-shape flowers bloom in late spring on sturdy spikes. Wood hyacinths can be planted in half sun or full shade.

Wood Sorrel. The whole plant is great raw - it has a nice acid flavor, refreshing. The flowers of the cosmopolitan weeds are yellow, but many varieties grow in the wild with pinkish flowers.

Wood chips. Many types and varieties are available. Some are free from your local municipality or utility company, but you'll have to pay for those of finer quality. Maintain a 3-inch layer for weed control.

Wood ashes contain a large amount of carbonate of potassa, with also the sulphate and silicate of that alkali. Peat ashes vary in different regions, but always are found useful as manure.

Wood handles need a little special care. Once a year, lightly sand the entire handle with fine sandpaper. Next, apply some boiled linseed oil to a rag and rub it into the handle. The oil will help to seal the wood and keep it free of splinters.

Wood ash is highly alkaline and may help to neutralize acidic soil but would not be recommended for use on alkaline soils. A generally safe rate of application would be 4-8 oz. per sq. yard of bed space.

Wood can be used for benches but it is not that water-resistant and are heavy. Even heavier when wet. Leave room to work and walk around or thru your benches. If using a cart, leave room to move it around.

The wood is sometimes used for furniture, in tokonoma pillars, and as a material for sculptors. The tanin-loaded bark is often used for tanning leather and as a dye.

Some wood mulches are good, some not so, and some have little use as mulch. The worst offender of the bunch is one I see used all the time and I suspect is even more prevalent than I know; trail chips.

Dead wood or diseased shoots need to be removed as soon as they are noticed whatever the time of year. Any other pruning must be done at the correct time of year for the particular tree or shrub in question.

Some wood, plastic and terracotta containers are liable to crack if they are left full of compost for, when it freezes, compost expands and can break weak materials. Their life is extended if they are kept under cover when not in use.
