Xeriscaping means creating a low-water landscape. It first became popular in areas of the Southwest and Mountain West, but is spreading throughout North America.

Xeriscaping is not the same as Zeroscaping. Zeroscaping is using a lot of rocks and a few sparse plants to create low-water-use landscaping.

Because it is so easy to grow, it is a popular plant for xeriscaping. It is drought-tolerant and will thrive in almost any soil. It blooms profusely from mid-spring to early summer, and the fragrance will scent the whole yard.

Xeriscaping is a water-wise type of landscaping designed to be water-efficient both with plants that require little water and a sloping design to maximize water flow to plants in general.

If you're interested in incorporating xeriscaping into your landscape but aren't quite ready to give up on grass, fear not. Even in a water-wise garden, you can have turfgrass, especially when it's something as drought tolerant as buffalo grass.

Use the plants in conjunction with the seven principles of Xeriscaping. They are: planning and design; soil improvement; limiting turf areas; efficient irrigation; use of mulches; use of low water-requiring plants, and appropriate maintenance.
