Aquavit, sometimes spelled Akvavit or Akevitt, depending on the nation of origin, is a Scandinavian liquor.

Akavit/Aquavit - Scandinavian form of distilled alcohol made from grain or potatoes, and flavored with caraway seeds.
à la - French, literally, "prepared in the style of".

Aquavit
A Scandinavian alcoholic beverage distilled from potatoes or at times, from grain, which is then flavored with spices. Among the most popular flavorings added to aquavit are aniseed, fennel seed, caraway seed, and bitter orange.

À la; Au; Aux (Fr.): lit.: "in the manner of."
À la banquière (Fr.): a garnish used for chicken, calf's sweetbreads, vol-au-vent.

This spirit is also known as eaux de vie or eau-de-vie. In Scandinavian countries a similar beverage is referred to as aqua vitae, aquavit, aquavite, akvavit, or snaps. And in Italy, grappa is an eau de vie.
