Jams and similar conserves, as well as some good honey, definitely have a place in the cupboard. Just in case you have to make that emergency sponge pudding...or something similar.

 


Another related term is conserves, which is often a combination of several fruits made in jams or preserves fashion. Orange apricot jam is an example of conserves. Other recipes for conserves might include nuts or raisins.

A bain-marie (also called a double boiler) is a device used in industry (phamaceutical, cosmetics, conserves, etc.), chemical laboratories, and in cooking to heat materials gradually to a fixed temperature.

Elder berries, which taste a little like blackcurrants, are made into conserves and jams, they go well with apples and can be dried and put into pies in the same way as currants.

" Thawing in the refrigerator also conserves energy since the frozen food helps cool your refrigerator as it thaws. Food thawed this way doesn't need to be cooked immediately.

The herb can also be used in sweet dishes - it is often added to fruit pies in American recipes, for example, or can be added to fruit syrups and conserves for an interesting flavour variation.
