Dessert wines tend to be rich, sweet, and higher in alcohol than conventional wines, and are traditionally served in small, dainty glasses.

Dessert wine - any sweet wine, or a wine that has been fortified by the addition of brandy.

Port: A fortified dessert wine. Vintage port is high quality, unblended wine aged in the bottle for at least 12 years; ruby port may be blended and is aged in wood for a short time; white port is made with white grapes.

The richer bodied Madeiras is generally served as an after dinner beverage while the lighter flavored varieties are favored as dessert wines. Madeira can also be used as a cooking wine for savory dishes and dessert sauces.

It can also be used as a dessert wine or to accompany cheese such as Munster (in particular the pungent Alsace variety which has the European Protected Denomination of Origin, or PDO, and not to be confused with the bland American Muenster.

Muscat wine or muscatel wine is a sweet dessert wine made from muscat grapes. The wine is made from black and white grape varieties so the color varies from golden to a darker amber. The wine has a distinctive musty flavor.
