eau de vie (oh-deuh-VEE) - Translated from the French, eau-de-vie means "water of life." It is an alcohol distillate that is rich with taste, flavor, and aroma. The French use the expression "eau-de-vie" as a generic term for all brandies.

Eau De Vie Literaly translates as 'water of life', eau de vie is the French name given to any number of fruit brandies. Especially used to flavour sauces and sweets, they include examples such as kirsch (cherry) and framboise (raspberry).

Apple brandy is a strong eau de vie, or brandy, distilled from apples, which preserves the fruit's distinctive aroma and sweet flavor. Calvados, from the Normandy region in France, is the best and best known.

Real German schnapps has no sugar added and is not particularly sweet, though it carries some of the flavor of its source fruit. The French eau de vie is in many ways analogous to a true schnapps, with its subtle fruit flavors.

A French term for an alcoholic beverage that is distilled from fermented cranberries for use as a brandy or liqueur. In France, this type of beverage can also be referred to as eau de vie, or "water of life."

Flavorings varied widely, from the original ratafia of morello cherry kernels to such herbs as angelica. Some ratafias were distilled, others were made by infusion of spices, herbs and fruits in brandy or eau de vie.
