A. Fresh ingredients and how long they last depend on the type of food you're dealing with.

Expiration Dates for Food
Most packaged foods include some type of expiration, sell-by or use-by date imprinted on the container. Find out what they mean to ensure you have the freshest food.

Expiration date
In baking or cooking in general, this is very critical to watch out for. This is especially true when buying yeast from your local grocery store.

Check the expiration date as baking powder loses its leavening power over time. Instead of discarding when it becomes old just use it as a deodorizer in your refrigerator.

Always check the expiration date to make sure it's fresh. Dry yeast can be stored at room temperature until the expiration date--or within 4 months of opening--but it lasts even longer in the refrigerator or freezer.

Purchased refrigerated pasta-Store in refrigerator and use unopened pasta by the expiration date. Store opened pasta in a tightly covered container for no more than 3 days.

Shelf life can also apply to medications, both over the counter and prescription, and you should definitely adhere to expiration dates on medications. Some drugs can actually become stronger over time, while others become inactive.

By Date that has passed the day it is being purchased, since the item has reached a point where it is to be removed from the store shelves. A Use By Date may also be referred to as Should Not Purchase After Date, Use Before Date, or Expiration Date.

If you come across pancetta vacuum-packed in plastic, you should use it within a week of its expiration date.

If you buy something already frozen like frozen shrimp or pre-packaged frozen fish, check out the expiration date on it. It'll certainly keep for an extended period of time, but, if the date's up, definitely get rid of it.

Most refrigerators have egg holders, if you use these it may be worth it to write the expiration date on the eggs with a pencil.

Pasteurized milk is still perishable and must be stored cold by both suppliers and consumers. Dairies print expiration dates on each container, after which stores will remove any unsold milk from their shelves.
