Ginger ale is a soft drink that enjoys considerable popularity in the USA. Like root beer (see sassafras), it is not a fermented beer, but simply sugar, plant extract and carbonated water.

The ginger ale in the modern Shirley Temple is usually substituted with lemon-lime soda. These include sodas like Sprite or 7-Up, but usually not Mountain Dew since it is high in caffeine.

In a pitcher, combine the ginger ale and pomegranate juice. Fill wine glasses with ice. Divide the liquid among the glasses, leaving room for seltzer. Pour the seltzer into each glass, to taste.

Using on/off turns, mix flour and next 5 ingredients in processor until blended. Transfer flour mixture to medium metal bowl. Gradually whisk in 3/4 cup ginger ale. (Can be made 6 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate.

Pour over the bourbon, apple liqueur and cranberry juice, then top up with the ginger ale.
To serve, hook the apple slice over the edge of the glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
