Ginger ale and ginger beer both got their names from an important ingredient: ginger. Dried ginger is one of the ingredients in the French four-spice mixture called quatre épices, along with nutmeg, white pepper, and cloves.

It is part of mainstream western food in ginger beer and desserts such as gingerbread and ginger snaps (a type of cookie). Though generally called "root", it is actually the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinalis.

Ginger is also used in puddings, jams, preserves and in some drinks like ginger beer, ginger wine and tea. Pickled ginger is a delicious accompaniment to satays and a colourful garnish to many Chinese dishes.
