They may also be called pancakes, hotcakes, or griddlecakes, and they are a common feature of American cuisine.

Whether they are called pancakes, flapjack, griddlecakes, flapjacks, wheat cakes, hot cakes, or funnel cakes, they are among our most popular food choices. A piping hot stack of buttered pancakes drenched in maple syrup is an all-American image.

Johnnycake or Johnny Cake - A flat cake made from cornmeal, salt, and boiling water or cold milk, usually fried like a griddlecake. Today's johnnycakes often include eggs, oil, and baking powder. Some versions are baked in the oven like cornbread.

Flapjacks - in the United States and Canada a another name for pancakes, griddlecakes and hotcakes. In England and Scotland, a name for drop scones.
