Maki refers to any type of sushi which is made in a roll with sushi rice, toasted seaweed nori, and various fillings. The word maki means 'roll,' and most people who have eaten sushi have consumed maki in some form or another.

maki.. rolled.
meshi.. informal word for cooked rice (can also mean "meal.")
mirin.. sweetened cooking sake.

tekka-maki.. rolled sushi made with raw tuna.
tendon.. rice topped with tempura fried shrimp.
tenpura.. lightly batter-fried seafood and vegetables.

Maki-sushi: sushi items rolled up in seaweed
Manju: sweet bean paste buns
Mirin: sweetened rice wine
Miso: thick fermented soybean paste
Mochi: also called sweet or sticky rice (made into cakes) ...

As an alternative, the sushi may be placed on dried seaweed (nori [-", のり]) and then rolled up; thus, the cylindric rice bits famous in the West are obtained (maki sushi, maki zushi [-"鮨, -"寿司, まきず-].
