Marinara sauce originated with sailors in Naples in the 16th century, after the Spaniards introduced the tomato to their neighboring countries. The word marinara is derived from marinaro, which is Italian for 'of the sea.

For Marinara Sauce, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in saucepan over medium heat until hot. Add onion. Cook and stir 3 minutes or until onion is soft. Add mushrooms, pepper, tomatoes and chili paste. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low.
