Mincemeat initially began as a way to preserve food. It would likely have been made in large batches and canned or stored. In many ways, early mincemeat resembled the ingredients cut up for sausages like black pudding and white pudding.

Mincemeat - a preserve of chopped apples, suet, dried fruits, candied peel, sugar, spices and brandy or rum. It is matured for a month or more and used in holiday pies and in some recipes for fruitcake.
