Somewhere along the line, somebody decided to make the name sound more Italian by spelling it "portabella." This spelling is the one now used by most commercial growers and wholesalers, but the name "portobollo" remains on menus today.

These gourmet mushrooms include truffles, enoki, chanterelle, portabella, shiitake, and oyster. These cultivated varieties are also becoming more popular in the better grocery stores.

This is an overgrown crimini (brown) mushroom (head is 4"-6" in diameter). It is often barbecued without the stalk, to be used as a vegetarian substitute for a hamburger. A common alternate spelling is "Portabella".

Types of Mushrooms
Both common and exotic mushrooms can be found on every continent. The most purchased mushroom in the United States is the white button mushroom, followed closely by the portabella and the shiitake.
