Shichimi-togarashi Japanese spice blend
This Japanese blend of whole and generally coarsely ground spices is also known as seven-flavor seasoning. While there are many variations, a typical shichimi-togarashi is shown below.

 


Shichimi togarashi. Mixed hot spices for table use. The seven flavors are: red pepper (togarashi), ground sansho pepper pods, dried mandarin orange peel, black hemp seeds or white poppy seeds, nori seaweed bits, and white sesame seeds.

You're most likely to encounter them as part of a mixture, like the Chinese five-spice powder or the Japanese shichimi togarashi. Toast Szechwan peppercorns briefly in a hot pan before using.

Shichimi and beni shoga can be added to taste. The flavor of broth and topping vary from region to region.

These aren't true peppercorns, but rather dried flower buds. You're most likely to encounter them as part of a mixture, like the Chinese five-spice powder or the Japanese shichimi togarashi.
