TONGS (0. Eng. tonge, M. Eng. tonge, cf. Du. tang, Ger. Zange, from base tang, to bite, cf. Gr. &iKVECV), a gripping and lifting instrument, of which there are many forms adapted to their specific use.

 


A hand held tool with a hinged or sprung pair of arms for lifting and turning food, eg turn the steak on the barbecue using tongs. Tongs may also be referred to as a pair of tongs.

True, these tongs can also be used for other cylindrical shaped foods like hot dogs and sausages, but we found them a little awkward for other foods.

Using tongs, transfer lamb to bowl. Add onions, carrot, garlic, and herbes de Provence to pot. Sauté until vegetables are deep brown, about 8 minutes. Add wine and broth to pot; return lamb and any accumulated juices to pot.
