There is a significant difference between the best if used by date and use by dates. Use by is not a freshness indicator but a recommendation regarding food safety. Any foods that have a specific use by date should be discarded after the date.

In an ideal world, some magical creatures would clean and tidy my store cupboard and keep everything in chronological order so nothing was ever left, forgotten, or past the use by date.
