alkaline -- Term pertaining to a highly basic, as opposed to acidic, subtance. For example, hydroxide or carbonate of sodium or potassium.

(1) Having a pH greater than 7.
(2) Substance that releases hydroxyl ions (OH-).

Developing begins by immersing the film in an alkaline solution of specific organic chemicals that neutralize the electrons and reduce Ag+ ions into minute grains of black silver metal.

Though the exact form of a response may not be known, there is usually some evidence for a species general preferences, for example, its need for acidic, neutral and/or alkaline soil conditions.
