The first version of ARC/INFO was launched in 1982 on minicomputers, as ESRI claims, the very first modern GIS. As computing shifted to Unix and Windows, ESRI followed launching ARC/INFO on both platforms.

In ARC/INFO, coverages were used to create networks on the fly. In ArcView GIS, a persistent network was created when a network analysis function was run on a line shapefile for the first time.
The ARC/INFO software package is a fully functional, high-end, analysis-oriented GIS. It can be run on mainframes, UNIX platform PCs and workstations as well as DOS-based PC's.
