ArcIMS (standing for Arc Internet Map Server) is a Web Map Server produced by ESRI. It is a GIS that is designed to serve maps across the Internet.

The ArcIMS Application Server is an application that runs as a Windows Service or Unix daemon.

ArcIMS Sites
ArcIMS is a relatively new technology (origins in the mid to late 1990s) that relies on server technologies developed by ESRI for streaming map data across the web using very narrow bandwidth.

ArcIMS 10 was the last release. Its entire functionality has been replaced by ArcGIS for Server. ArcIMS users have been provided upgrade paths to ArcGIS for Server for a number of years.

The tandem of ArcIMS and Image Web Server provides a powerful Internet-based mapping application with very high speed display.

Other applications for publishing geographic information on the web include MapInfo's MapXtreme, Intergraph's GeoMedia WebMap (TM), ESRI's ArcIMS, ArcGIS Server, AutoDesk's Mapguide, SeaTrails' AtlasAlive, and the open source MapServer.
