[ESRI software] In ArcView 3, a file for creating and storing documents for GIS work.
ArcView is geographic information system (GIS) software for visualizing, managing, creating, and analyzing geographic data.
ArcView Themes
A GIS links sets of features and their attributes and manages them together in units called themes.
What is ArcView 3?
ArcView 3 (latest version 3.3) is perhaps more familiar to many users, as it was the industry standard for desktop GIS throughout the late 1990s.
ArcView provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit simple geographic features.
Start ArcView (Look for the icon on the desktop or select it from the Start/Programs/ESRI/ArcView GIS/ArcView GIS) and create a new project with a new view. Do not add data to the view at this moment.
Part of ArcView's power derives from its extensibility through the built-in Avenue scripting language.
Open the ArcView program. and select New and then New Project.
This opens an "untitled" Project window. Before you do anything else, give the project a file name by selecting File and then Save Project As...

This portion of the assignment will focus on learning the basics of ArcView - specifically the View document.
ArcView is the entry level of ArcGIS licensing offered. With ArcView, one is able to view and edit GIS data held in flat files, or view data stored in a Relational database management system by accessing it through ArcSDE.

ArcView is the world's most popular desktop GIS and mapping software, with more than 500,000 copies in use worldwide.
ArcView 3.x is still available for purchase, and ArcInfo Workstation is still included in a full ArcGIS ArcInfo license to provide some editing and file conversion functionality that has not been included to date in ArcGIS.

ArcView(TM) (ESRI, Inc.) Shapefiles were also considered. Import and export of this format was also supported in ARC/INFO. Shapefiles are binary and store graphics and attributes in a nontopological format (ESRI 1995b).

ArcView allows a user to edit a theme that is based on an ArcView shapefile. Using New Theme and Edit function in ArcView can digitize the spatial features. There are three feature types: point, line, and polygon. Users can choose one of them to edit.
If ArcView wasn't installed into the default installation directory on your desktop please follow the appropriate path to the EXT32 directory.

Problems?
Inside ArcView, the tolerances are set to accept only close matches (Av_score of 100).
The standardized addresses are matched to street centerlines using the following data sets. Once a match is made the address is not used for the next data set.

Shapefile - "An ArcView GIS data set used to represent a set of geographic features such as streets, hospital locations, trade areas, and ZIP Code boundaries. Shapefiles can represent point, line, or area features.
ArcInfo Version 7 and ArcView Version 2 support IAC. IAC tools in AML (ARC Macro Language) support real-time GIS, a network GIS process server, interoperability, and open integration between ArcInfo and other applications.
At the time, neither ArcInfo nor ArcView were available at the time, so the department used the mapping software they had created. The first step was to digitize the most current voting precinct map and use it to produce the map.
But what about getting output in ArcView's shapefile format? "No problem!" said Dr. Wu, and before long he had added the shapefile format as an output option in R2V for Windows. (Up to this point, Dr. Wheller hadn't even bought the program!) Dr.
On the desktop, ESRI's ArcView allows the integration of aerial imagery in a manner similar to workstation- based ArcInfo.
For example, the recent release of ArcView 3-D Analyst from Redlands, Calif.-based ESRI Inc. provides visualization capabilities in a PC environment that once were reserved for UNIX-based GIS products.
ESRI Shape Files are used mainly in ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS, although supported in other software as well. Because of the simple data and file structure, shapefiles draw very quickly in ArcGIS 9.

Allows objects from one application to be embedded within another (e.g., taking an Excel spreadsheet and putting it into a Word document). ArcView Version 2 does not support the still evolving OLE standard. Instead, it supports DDE (see DDE).
