GIS BIPBits per pixel

Bitmap Data
Stores the actual image, pixel by pixel.
The following sections discuss the data stored in the BMP file or DIB in details. This is the standard BMP file format.

bitmap. a representation of an image captured as a set of pixels arrayed in a rectangular series of horizontal lines
bitonal. purely black and white

BITMAP
An unstructured grid image in which data values are recorded as either 1 or 0. The term is often used to refer to graphics composed of pixels, for example, scanned maps or photographs.

Bitmap - A form of computer graphics created by a pattern of tiny dots. A bitmap requires a large amount of memory to store and becomes visually blurred (i.e. losing definition) when the image is enlarged. See also Raster.

A bitmap corresponds bit-for-bit with an image displayed on a screen, generally in the same format used for storage in the display's video memory, or maybe as a device-independent bitmap.

A pixel is the basic unit of measurement in computer screen resolution and is also, the smallest unit constituting a bitmap (raster) image.

Because the operation must apply uniformly to every record, you can and two selections by operating on their bitmaps bit-by-bit.

Completed designs are identified as specific tree codes and saved as rendered bitmaps with different light-source shadings. The bitmaps then can be used for subsequent 3-D rendering using texture-mapping techniques.

I instead sampled a blue bitmap I found on the Internet and opened it and the DEM in Paintshop Pro. By creating a mask of the DEM image and pasting it as a transparent selection onto the blue background, I was able to create the impression I wanted.

The ESRI WebLink ActiveX control ships with methods to convert Windows bitmap files-exported by the Map control-into either of these two formats.

[ESRI software] Represents a surface that can be drawn to, for example, a screen, bitmap, or printer. In ArcGIS, the Display abstract class is used to abstract a device context.

Moreover, many raster data formats such as bitmaps (BMP) and most Tagged Image File Formats (TIFF) don't facilitate co-ordinate information. In recent years an extension of the Tiff format, called Geo-Tiff, has been developed.

A simple graphic tool included with XMap, Topo USA and Street Atlas USA Plus for creating custom draw symbols that can be added to the map. XSym also allows bitmap image files to be imported for use as map symbols.
