[edit] Bits per pixel
Main article: Color depth
The number of distinct colors that can be represented by a pixel depends on the number of bits per pixel (bpp).

Bits per pixel
PNG images can either use palette-indexed color or be made up of one or more channels (numerical values directly representing quantities about the pixels).

The default number of intensity levels for each component is 32, resulting in a total of 32768 possible colors (equivalent to 15 bits per pixel). If significantly more levels than this are used, not only will r.
