Command line interfaces, where the user provides the input by typing a command string with the computer keyboard and the system provides output by printing text on the computer monitor.

command line interfaceA software product that allows the user to type in commands at a prompt. Contrast to forms interface.

Things then progressed to the point of command line interface (CLI) where individual commands were typed one by one into the computer for processing.

Such a tool would make use of the command line interface common in raster GIS, but would provide a higher level programming language in terms most scientists could understand.
