Finding compass bearings and grid bearings

The Beidou/Compass G4 satellite launched on October 31 achieved geostationary orbit by November 6. The satellite is positioned at about 160 degrees east longitude. G4 is the furthest east of the operational Beidou geostationary satellites.

In China between 1040 and 1117, the magnetic compass was being developed and applied to navigation.[2] This let masters continue sailing a course when the weather limited visibility of the sky.

Bearing: The compass direction from a position to a destination, measured to the nearest degree (see azimuth). In a GPS receiver, bearing usually refers to the direction to a waypoint.

A compass is the instrument of choice for following a prescribed route. It shows the deviation from a standard direction, called a bearing or course (for our purposes, magnetic declination is irrelevant).
