In the construction of database applications, it can be useful to introduce an additional layer of data dictionary software, i.e. middleware, which communicates with the underlying DBMS data dictionary.

 


Data Dictionary
Document containing information about a series of datasets. A Data Dictionary is a form of metadata or 'data about the data.

Data Dictionary - A document that contains features, rules and item definitions for a specific set of geospatial data.

A catalog of all data held in a database, or a list of items giving data names and structures. Also referred to as DD/D for data dictionary/directory.

Another step in the planning process is to create a data dictionary for use in capturing attribute data for each feature. If no data dictionary is used, features will be generic points, lines, or polygons without attributes.

Which is a very basic Data Dictionary that is made by the application that Matt used to extract his census data. So, not all metadata will be found in ArcCatalog, and Some metadata is better tan none at all.

The Perceptory defines the functions used for generalization and their order in the data dictionary. Of course being a visual modeling tool it leaves to the user the selection of the generalization procedures.
