Chapter 1: Understanding Digital Maps
When you want to use a paper map, first you need to unfold it. You need a large space, probably an entire table, to do this.

digital map library : A series of directories and subdirectories designed to uniformly organize a collection of spatial data. Map libraries organize geographic data spatially as a set of tiles and thematically as a set of layers.

Digital Map: A computer-readable representation of a geographic area or phenomenon that can be displayed or analyzed by a digital computer. This is in contrast to an analog "paper" map.

Coverage - (1) A digital map that forms the basic unit of vector data storage in Arc/Info. A coverage stores map data in the three basic forms of graphic elements, i.e. points, lines, polygons. (2) A single theme or layer of data (e.g.

In the context of digital mapping this includes digitizing, direct recording by electronic survey instruments, and the encoding of text and attributes.
Data Conversion: The translation of data from one format to another.

[LINK] To prepare the analysis, digital maps of the water service areas were stored in the GIS. Using the buffer function in the GIS, a half-mile zone was drawn around the water company service area.

Geographic Information System (GIS) A geographic information system merges information in a computer database with spatial coordinates on a digital map.

In capturing and analysing the work done on site, Framework Archaeology used modern surveying methods to build digital maps of the using standard mapping software from leading software companies.

Spatial Database Catalogs and Libraries provide users an interface to search and download the digital maps, but do not match the need for interactive mapping or other GIS functions.

Edge Matching is an important part of the creation of a digital map or GIS database. One digital map may encompass many paper maps.

Attribute All GISs have to store digital maps somehow. The organization of the map into digits has a major impact on how we capture, store, and use the map data in a GIS. GISs store data in an organized way as a database.

GIS readers are computer applications that are designed to allow users to easily view digital maps as well as view and query GIS-managed data. By definition, they usually allow very little if any editing of the map or underlying map data.

[ESRI software] In ArcGIS software, a digital map feature that represents a place or thing that has area at a given scale. A polygon feature may have one or more parts. For example, a building footprint is typically a polygon feature with one part.

The encoding of data in the context of digital mapping this includes digitizing, direct recording by electronic survey instruments, and the encoding of text and attributes.

Combine imagery in virtually any format and projection with the precision mapping capabilities of MicroStation and Bentley's geospatial applications for map production and digital map creation to support your business or government's requirements.

The most basic form of digital map data represents the same types of data that are displayed on paper maps. Digital maps use the same measurement frameworks, and frequently also use the same representation methods (e.g.
