DXF (Drawing eXchange Format) - The digital file format for exchanging data between AutoCAD and other graphics data processing software packages. It has now become the industry standard for graphics file exchange between CAD and GIS applications.

The two systems had only one common exchange format for unattributed line and polygon data: the AutoCAD(TM) (Autodesk Inc.) Drawing Exchange Format (DXF) (Autodesk 1993). Exchange of other data is limited to column-formatted text files.

AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format developed by Autodesk[citation needed] for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs.

A CAD feature dataset is comprised of five read-only feature classes: points, polylines, polygons, multipatch and annotation. ArcGIS supported formats include DWG (AutoCAD), DXF (AutoDesk Drawing Exchange Format), ...
