[data capture] A type of scanner in which a hard-copy image or map is attached to a cylinder that spins while a sensor captures a digital image from the surface of the page.

Paper mapping can be scanned, with a flatbed or drum scanner, to generate raster GIS data themes.

150 DPC are required, or large maps are used, drum scanners are required. The map is mounted on a cylindrical drum, which spins as a detector is moved horizontally across the drum.
