Eastings: The complete Easting value is placed as close to each corner as possible without interfering with any other border information. Its true position is dependent on the actual grid placement within the map.

UTM coordinates are typically given with the zone first, then the easting, then the northing. So, in UTM coordinates, Red Hill is located in zone twelve at 328204 E ( easting), 4746040 N (northing).

Positions are measured using Eastings and Northings, measured in meters, instead of Latitude and Longitude. Eastings start at 500,000 on the centre line of each zone.

The colour-coded map shows the maximal absolute error of a rigid-body shift in the image when the components of shift, both Northing and Easting, were determined from a single point located at the center of the map sheet.

A grid is a rectangular system with the easting and the northing lines forming right angles at the point of intersection.

Within each zone the central meridian is given an Easting value of 500,000 metres. The equator is designated as having a Northing value of 0 for northern hemisphere coordinates.

By providing an SPC easting (x) and northing (y), the state name, and the zone number, any location in the United States can be identified by a unique coordinate value. SPC Zone boundaries follow state and county boundaries.

orthogonal system A coordinate system in which the X ( Easting), and the Y (Northing) axes are scaled the same and consistently in all parts of the map, and the curvature of the earth is ignored.

New option for alignment tie by co-ordinates (northing and easting) has been provided in the alignment dialog in ABC Wizard.

If they are negative, you'll have to add a large offset to each value (creating a False Easting and False Northing). ArcGIS doesn't like negative numbers, and you'll get a "Warning: Inconsistent Extent" message if you try and open the XY coords.

Origin - The reference point in a coordinate system at which both the easting and northing (i.e. x and y) values are equal to zero.
