Elements of Cartographic Style
Maps are a means of communication. If a person has gone to the trouble of making a map, presumeably this cartographer is trying to communicate something about a place.

RAM Elements (formerly RAM Advanse) provides quick, reliable tools for specific structural tasks.

element
(CAD) Any defined shape in a CAD object. These include arc, arc wedge, arc chord, box, circle, elliptical arc wedge, elliptical arc chord, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, point, polygon, and text elements.

Element Synthesis in Stars
On this page we look into how the elements that we have found in nature were created in the past.

Elementary landforms (segments, facets, relief units) are the smallest homogeneous divisions of the land surface, at the given scale/resolution. These are areas with relatively homogenuous morphometric properties, bounded by lines of discontinuity.

The elements in a vector based GIS are then the DBMS (Data Base Management System) for the attributes and the system that manages the topological data. In some GIS packages, the DBMS is based in an existing software, i.e. dBASE.

Element of a tessellation database. Tiles subdivide the area covered by a map and organise the data by location (e.g., counties might be the tiles in a nation-wide database).

A map element that shows the map scale graphically.
Scanning
The process of capturing data in raster format with a device called a scanner. Some scanners also use software to convert raster data to vector data.

Create elements either by entering a message string/symbol ID or by selecting the elements graphically.

Naming the elements of a complex software project, such as a GIS project, is important. If your software provides facilities to insert comments, notes, or other documentation, then exploit them.
Exercise 8a-adding themes to a view ...

Most basic element of information in a raster or grid description of spatial elements. Its shape is usually rectangular and it has an implicitly defined size and geographic position. (Also referred to as a pixel.)

Adding the element of time
The condition of the Earth's surface, atmosphere, and subsurface can be examined by feeding satellite data into a GIS.

The fifteen elements of the Dublin Core may be simply defined as:
Title
The name given to this resource by its creator. The name need not necessarily be unique.

What are the elements of ArcGIS?
ArcGIS has four basic components: ArcMap (the basic GIS browser, where the majority of work takes place), ArcCatalog (where files are created and organized), ...

A similar sign change applies if the south polar aspect is intended.

While the basic elements of topology and theme existed previously in cartography, the John Snow map was unique, using cartographic methods not only to depict but also to analyze clusters of geographically dependent phenomena for the first time.

(1 Ur is defined as the total count rate from 1 ppm uranium in equilibrium)

Basic graphical elements - These are the points, lines and areas in a geographic database.
Batch processing - The method of data processing by submitting programs and data to the computer in one or more files rather than interactively from a terminal.

Cell: The basic element of spatial information in a grid data set. A group of cells form a grid. Cells store values that can be related to a table.
Centerline: Linear feature representing the midpoint along a linear element like a road or stream.

SCALE BAR
A map element which shows the scale graphically.
SOFTWARE
The programs, procedures, rules, and their associated documentation, for a computer system.

There remains an element of uncertainty, but most authorities credit the origin of the name Labrador to João Fernades a Portuguese explorer and lavrador, or "landholder", in the Azores.

Pixel: One picture element. Often used synonymously with a raster or grid cell. The smallest discrete element which makes up an image.
Planimetric: In mapping, refers to spatial data that do not include topographic or relief data.

Dot map Simple thematic technique using dots to show the spatial distribution of a chosen element. One dot usually represents a specified number of the mapped element.

These early records followed the two element structure of modern geographic information systems: a graphic file linked to an attribute data base.

A metadata schema specifies the order and types and labels of information elements describing a geodata set. SCOTS Standards based commercial off-the-shelf software.

Parent Element:
A radioactive element that spontaneously decays into a new substance. The product of this decay is known as a "daughter" element.
Peak Flow:
The maximum instantaneous discharge of a stream at a specific location.

oceanic survey Survey or examination of condition in the ocean or any part of it, with reference to animal or plant life, chemical elements present, temperature gradients, etc.

In supervised classification, a sample of image elements for each land cover class is used to estimate parameters, typically a mean vector and covariance matrix, for input to the classifier.

Geographic information science, the science of GIS, is concerned with geographic concepts, the primitive elements used to describe, analyze, model, reason about, and make decisions on phenomena distributed on the surface of the earth.

Various computer techniques were used to enhance and blend a series of images, eliminating unwanted elements and bringing out important details . Special photogrammetric techniques were used to remove distortions from the digitized photos.

- This section of the report presents maps of several elements on a county-by-county basis in the conterminous states. Included are elements of importance to environmental studies and major elements.

A raster display builds an image from pixels, pels, or elements of coarse or fine resolution. A raster database maintains a similar "picture" of reality in which each cell records some sort of information averaged over the cell's area.

Environmental management and stewardship programs integrate a broad spectrum of data with the analysis tools of GIS to provide a better understanding of how elements of natural communities interact across a landscape.

In an object-oriented approach, there are three data types and five operating characteristics that are most important basic elements and operations. The data types include object, class, and instance.

as an array or grid of pixels (picture elements). Each pixel has an x,y coordinate defining its position on a display surface (computer monitor). Values describing its colour, based on the RGB colour model are also stored at each pixel.

*** Pixel: 1) A contraction of the words picture element. Pixel refers to the smallest unit of information available in an image or raster map. 2) The smallest element of a display device that can be independently assigned attributes such as color ...

Geodetic coordinates
A coordinate system whose elements are latitude, longitude and geodetic height. The latitude is an angle based on the perpendicular to the ellipsoid. Longitude is the angle measured in the XY plane. See: ECEF, Ellipsoid.

You should now be at the "Select Data Elements" page where you will cherry pick the types of demographic information you want to download. Under "Choose table selection method," click on by subject.

A digital map layout containing neatlines, north arrow, logos, and other cartographic map elements for a common map series.

It is possible to store such data in data structures called sparse matrices whereby only the array indices and values of the non zero elements are stored. This reduces the memory requirement considerably.
