The fault was first identified in Northern California by UC Berkeley geology professor Andrew Lawson in 1895 and named by him after a small lake which lies in a linear valley formed by the fault just south of San Francisco, the Laguna de San Andreas.
Changing Default Symbols
To change the colors and shapes that represent a theme's features (its symbology), you use the Legend Editor. You open the Legend Editor by double-clicking on the theme name or symbol in the view's Table of Contents.

By default the shapefiles you download have generic number names. To make it less confusing, while also saving the joined data you just created, you should change the name of the shapefile. From the menu bar select Theme and then Convert to Shapefile.
