[data sharing] Acronym for National Spatial Data Infrastructure. A federally mandated framework of spatial data that refers to U.S. locations, as well as the means of distributing and using that data effectively.
Digital Geospatial Metadata - DGM: DGM was approved in June 1994 by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). DGM describes the specifications for the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of metadata.
When you see metadata in this format, it should be FGDC-compliant, and contain values for specific fields, such as projection, coordinate system, units, data format, and a person to contact in order to obtain the dataset.
The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) had used the Z39.50 protocol to develop a server that enables public search for digital spatial data at registered National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Clearinghouses.
